Flooring 101

Every flooring material comes with advantages and potential limitations. When reviewing the different options, it is helpful to keep the following characteristics in mind.

Hardwood Floors:

  • Complement almost any d'ecor
  • Appreciate in value - they are an outstanding investment
  • Add strength and stability to existing floor
  • Fairly easy to maintain and can be easily restored
  • Add prestige to your home
  • Have a higher price per square foot than most other flooring options

Carpets:

  • Add warmth, color and comfort to a room
  • Are often used to soften the overlook of the decor
  • Are made from a range of fibers, including olefin, polyester, nylon and wool
  • Come in many types of weaves and construction, including cut pile, shag, and Berber

Tile floors:

  • Create a rich, elegant style
  • Feature a wide range of design options from earth tones and natural surfaces to highly polished and colorful tiles
  • Can use color-coordinated grout to add drama or intensify color options
  • Are extremely durable, practical, and easy to maintain

Laminate floors:

  • Provide the look of hardwood or stone at a substantially lower cost
  • Are extremely durable - they have greater impact & scuff resistance than hardwood floors
  • Won't dent under heavy furniture
  • Are easier to clean and maintain than hardwood
  • Are fade resistant - they do not fade with time like some hardwood, carpet and vinyl options

Natural stone floors:

  • Add exceptional beauty and elegance to any space
  • Are porous and can stain easily
  • Can be quite fragile
  • Are among the more expensive flooring options

Vinyl floors:

  • Offer greater softness and resiliency underfoot compared to tile, natural stone, or hardwood floors
  • Come in a huge variety of colors, patterns, and textured surfaces
  • Are highly resistant to stain and moisture and are easy to maintain
  • Help insulate against heat and cold and to absorb sound
  • Are extremely versatile - they can be installed almost anywhere
  • Offer affordable options for any budget
